Do you make your own beauty products at home? I started recently and I’m looooving it. My favorite creation so far is this amazing FLUFFY Homemade Whipped Body Butter. This stuff is unreal, guys. I started making this DIY shea body butter recently and haven’t been able to get enough of it. My skin has been soaking-it-up (literally, lol!), especially as the weather gets colder.

I love that when you make your OWN beauty goodies you can truly choose what you put on your skin. And I chose to put my favorite three skin-care ingredients in my Homemade Whipped Body Butter. ↓↓↓

shea-butter

1: Shea butter is magic on dry, chapped skin. It contains Vitamin A & E and is also said to help with skin inflammation and even contains anti-ageing properties.

2: Coconut Oil is another favorite of mine. It is antifungal and contains Vitamin E. It is also supeeeeerrr moisturizing and smells delicious.

3: Argon Oil is not just great on your hair, it soaks right in, nourishing your skin with antioxidants, Vitamins A & E. A little bit goes a long way!

If I knew how easy it was to make body butters at home, I would have started a long time ago. Measure and add all the ingredients in a deep bowl and whip them with an electric mixer until they are super FLUFFY! You will have to scrape down the sides a couple times, and in total, your Whipped Body Butter will mix for about 5 minutes. The final texture should be “whipped” like icing and if you turn your bowl upside down it should not fall out.

I have tried out this Homemade Whipped Body Butter in many ways and these are my favorite uses so far:

  • All-over body cream
  • Under eye cream before bed (it seriously helps with tired, puffy eyes)
  • Hand, nail and cuticle cream
  • After wax/shave cream (it is very soothing on sensitive areas)
  • Foot cream (with mint essential oil – I love putting on a thick coat on my feet with socks before bed )
  • Soothing cream on irritated skin

If you make this Homemade Whipped Body Butter at home, let me know your favorite way to use it below or snap a photo and tag #CearasKitchen on Instagram.

And depending on what you are using it for, you can “flavor’ your Whipped Body Butter to your taste with a few drops of essential oil. Or, if your prefer, you can always leave it “au naturel”. Store your Whipped Body Butter in a clean, sealable container like a jar. Tie a ribbon around it and you even have a fun, homemade gift for someone special. Enjoy! 😉

DIY Fluffy Whipped Body Butter with Shea Butter, Coconut and Argon Oil

  • Author: Ceara
  • Total Time: 15 mins

Description

The world’s fluffiest DIY Whipped Body Butter made with only FOUR ingredients. This heavenly homemade body butter is soothing and moisturizing without being oily or greasy at all.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup shea butter (make sure to pack it into the cup, see photo)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp argon oil
  • 34 drops essential oil (rosemary, lavender, mint, lemon, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients to a deep bowl.
  2. Begin mixing the ingredients with an electric mixer on low. Scrape down the sides a few times. Once the ingredients begin to combine, incrementally increase the speed of the mixer until it is on high. Whip for a total of five minutes until your Whipped Body Butter is super fluffy. You will know when it’s ready when the final texture is “whipped” like icing and, if you turn your bowl upside down, it does not fall out.

Notes

1) Use refined coconut oil if you do not want your whipped body butter to have a mild coconut scent.
2) Make sure to check the ingredients on your argon oil bottle. There should just be argon oil listed! A lot of argon oils are cut with vegetable oil and other oils.
3) Both the coconut oil and shea butter should look like the ones I’ve used in the pictures. This means that they should not be in a liquid state (this will make a super oily lotion and it will not fluff up). The shea butter should be firm but creamy and the coconut oil should be slightly firm.
4) I have not tried this recipe with yellow shea butter, only with the one I’ve linked in this recipe which yields great results.

  3. Hi, I recently tried to make this using the exact same proportions and it turned out liquidy. I mixed it using an electric mixer but it is not fluffing up. Any idea what to do?

    1. Ceara, I’ve been experimenting & every site I’ve seen says to melt the Shea butter. And every time mine doesn’t get fluffy! I ran across your page and can’t wait to get off work and try a batch with solid Shea. 😊 I’m worried about it being lumpy though. And will a hand mixer be able to handle whipping it? We will see…

      1. SUCCESS!!!! Ceara’s recipe is amazing. I came home from work and made a batch. I did put the Shea butter in the microwave on low for about 4 minutes, to soften. And I had not been adding solid coconut oil. This time I did. My butter turned out so light, airy – like whipped cream. It filled 6 jars instead of 3. 😁 I wish I could add pics. My “trial & error” batches feel like silly putty to the touch. I will still try to sell them but at a discounted price.

  4. Wonderful!!Best recipe for homemade body cream yet! Use it on my face as well…Today I am gong to try it with almond oil…also works with grapeseed oil,,,

I melted the butter and coconut oil….great texture.

  5. What a luxurious treat! And so simple to make! I substituted flax seed oil because I wasn’t able to find Aragon oil locally and didn’t want to wait for it to arrive if I ordered it online.

Mine also has a bit of grit to it – I wonder if I just need to let the mixer run a few minutes longer. It doesn’t bother me, but I can see how it might bother someone else.

I might mention that I used 6 drops of the EO that I chose and can barely tell it’s there (and it’s from one of the top 2 EO companies that shall not be named, so I consider it a quality product). It was probably too close to the scent of the shea butter and just got lost. That’s okay though. I’ll try another scent next time.

This recipe yielded 12 ounces for me, in case anyone was curious. I filled 3 4-ounce containers.

Best part, hands down: my skin still feels soft and hydrated at the end of the day. If there is a downside for me, it’s that there was a learning curve on how much to use – a little bit goes a long way! And ultimately, that’s a good thing 🙂 But as a caution to others, you may need to build a few minutes into your routine to allow it time to absorb – and try using less than you think you will need. You can always apply a bit more if you need it.

Thank you so much for this recipe – I would give you a big hug if I could! I consider myself somewhat of a lotion snob, and this meets both my criteria – clean ingredients, and long lasting moisture.

    XOXO Happy New Year!

    1. Thank you so much, Michelle for the lovely comment! I am so so happy that you are enjoying the lotion! I am glad to hear it works with other oils as well. Happy 2017 to you too! All the best! 🙂 <3

  6. I’ve tried 3 kinds of coconut oil and the end result is always gritty. It dissolves of course within a few seconds of putting the body butter on the skin but I was really hoping for a soft, creamy consistency. It looks great, like yours, but I don’t love the texture. Thoughts?

    1. Hmmm, my texture turned out super creamy. What temperature is your coconut oil before you add it? It should definitively not be hard or else the end result may be gritty in the final result. I hope this helps!

      1. Would you suggest partially melting the coconut oil first then to soften it up to get rid of the grit?

        1. Hmm… I have never experience a “gritty” texture when making this cream. That being said, if your coconut oil is cold it may make this cream a bit gritty I imagine. I would recommend warming the coconut oil up but just to a soft, room temperature (like in the photo). Let me know if this helps!

    2. It’s very possible that you’re getting a ‘gritty’ texture due to the shea butter you’re using. By the bright white color of the finished whipped butter that’s shown above, it looks like Ceara used refined shea butter (she didn’t specify if she used refined or unrefined). Although unrefined shea is better for your skin, it can be trickier to work with and should be melted down with VERY low heat – ONLY enough to make it a liquid. Then, as it slowly solidifies, whip it for a LONG time. Sometimes, even after that, the unrefined shea will turn gritty again if exposed to temperature fluctuations.

  7. I made this and I’m a bit disappointed at how oily it turned out. I expected some oiliness, but this is REALLY oily. Wasn’t cheap to make either….

    1. Hmm… I am wondering why yours turned out so oily? It is definitively a cream for dryer skin but it should also soak into your skin easily. Was your coconut oil or shea butter melted by chance when you made it?

  8. I have never made my own lotion, but now I want to! My skin is so crazy dry this time of year and I love how easy this is to make! I almost never use my electric mixer anymore ( because It’s so easy to mix plant based stuff by hand….expect for aquafaba whipped cream!) so this will put it to good use!

    1. I just started making some of my own beauty products and it’s so much fun!! Let me know if you end up trying it, Jenn!

    1. Thanks so much…instead success…have tryed many but this the best..added a quater of a cup of cocoa butter…orange grapefruit and lemongrass essential oils..which are too much….I also melted part of the oils before the whipping…

      So simple…such luxery….
      Ellen

    2. Yay!! I am honestly in love with this DIY version! It’s so simple and luxurious! Let me know if you end up trying it 🙂
