I’ve had homemade chocolate peanut butter on my mind for awhile now and my first thought was to just throw some dairy-free chocolate chips or dark chocolate into a batch of homemade peanut butter which seemed like a perfectly delicious idea but I wanted this Chocolate Peanut Butter to be as healthy as possible! Instead of adding oil (or unsustainable palm oil which is what is found in a lot store-bought chocolate spreads *cough* nutella *cough*), tons of refined sugar and preservatives, all that you need for this Homemade Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread is some Roasted Peanuts, Cocoa Powder, and Cane Sugar!

If you have never made nut butters at home before, peanut butter is a great nut butter to start off with. The peanuts almost melt in the food processor after a few minutes. Not only healthier, homemade nut butters are a lot cheaper than the ones often found in store. Peanuts are an especially inexpensive nut – I used 3 heaping cups of peanuts in this recipe which cost me under 3 dollars! A big difference from fancy store bought chocolate peanut butters which cost upwards of 8 – 16 dollars. 16 dollar nut butter is nowhere to be found on this student’s budget 😉

Wishing you a very Happy Valentine’s Day filled with lots of love… and, of course, chocolate! Maybe even this Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread too if you’re lucky 😀 <3 Lots of love from my kitchen to yours! XOXO, Ceara

Homemade Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread

  • Author: Ceara
  • Total Time: 25 mins
  • Yield: 2 cups 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups roasted peanuts
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup cane sugar or coconut sugar
  • pinch of salt (if the peanuts are not already salted)

Instructions

  1. Using the S-Blade, place the roasted peanuts in the food processor. Process the roasted peanuts, turning off the food processor and scraping down the sides when necessary, until a creamy and smooth peanut butter is formed. I always process the peanuts for an extra couple minutes because I prefer a more runny consistency. First the peanuts will break down into a crumbly peanut mixture, then to a sand like texture, then they will form a sticky ball, and, after around 10 minutes, the roasted peanuts will form a smooth and creamy peanut butter. *Make sure to give your food processor breaks if it begins to heat up too much.
  2. Using an immersion or traditional blender, blend the cane sugar if it isn’t granulated and fine like normal sugar. Add the cocoa powder and cane sugar to the peanut butter in the food processor and process until the peanut butter becomes creamy and smooth again (you might have to blend for up to 4 minutes in order for the sugar to fully melt into the peanut butter).
  3. Eat by the spoonful, serve on toast or on top of banana bread! Enjoy!

  4. I made your homemade peanut butter and it was amazing.

As a slight modification, once it is in chocolate peanut butter mode… and 1/4 c of real maple syrup to the food processor and run for a couple more minutes. It will create a “Dough” ball. Take that ball, press it into bread 5X5 pan, chill, cut into squares and enjoy. The taste doesn’t change much but it becomes more like a candy bar.

    1. Thank you SO much for taking the time to leave a comment and let me know how the peanut butter turned out – I’m so happy that you enjoyed it!! Your idea of adding maple syrup and turning this recipe into a delicious chocolate bar sounds AMAZING! I will have to try it 🙂 Have a great week!

  5. Drool Ceara!!! Chocolate and peanut butter is a favorite combo of mine! This would be delicious drizzled all over my 1 bowl peanut butter chocolate chip cake, omg! I pretty much make all my own homemade nut butters as well. I make pecan butter, almond butter, tahini, etc. I have made homemade peanut butter as well, but it’s been a long time. I love Organic Nut ‘n’ Butter brand…only ingredients are peanuts and salt. But yes, homemade is so darn good!
I make a quickie chocolate peanut butter version by just mixing peanut butter with melted dark chocolate and it’s sooooo yummy! Will totally try this as well. I can dip my Valentine’s strawberries in this, YUM!

    1. Chocolate and Peanut Butter never fails to rock my socks are as well, Brandi! After posting this I immediately thought of your addition of espresso to my chocolate almond meal cookies! I am going to add in a bit next time I whip up this chocolate peanut butter! This spread would honestly be to die for drizzled over your wonderful 1 bowl peanut butter choc chip cake – the two together honestly sound like a match made in heaven 🙂 And I am 100% sure that dipping strawberries in this would be simply divine!

And can I just say, I love that you make your own tahini! It’s the one butter I’ve never tried to make at home! I think I just might have to give it a go 🙂 Homemade is always so much better than the store bought stuff!

  6. Happy Friday Ceara! I have not even heard of chocolate peanut butter but would imagine, that yes, it would be very expensive here, if you could even buy it. And I’m sure it would contain fake, phony ingredients anyhow. But I’m not sure if this is a good idea for me to make because I got this bad feeling that once I tasted it, i would eat every last drop of it! There are so many uses I can think of for this too! Thanks for sharing.

  10. This sounds AMAZING, Ceara! Homemade peanut butter has been on my bucket list for years now! And this looks absolutely incredible! Anything that tastes like a peanut butter cup is a winner in my book! Not sure if you have this over in Belgium, but Reese’s came out with a peanut butter spread that tastes just like the inside of a pb cup! Needless to say, I’ve gone through quite a few jars! 🙂 But this dark chocolate version sounds way better! I can almost taste it from here! Pinned! Have a lovely weekend, friend!
